Hitler Loses at Warhammer Online

WarHammer........Serious you must be crazy to play it?
Went into my local Warhammer shop...1 little 1 inch figure...£10!!!
I have seen fully grown men in there 25's going in there, looking chabby and having a case full of them!!
What are people thinking......a few figures will cost you £100, and there are 200 paints and they cost £2 each, and you need most of the paint for detail.
Even if i had very deep pocket and had parent with deep pocket i would not touch Warhammer with a 1 mile barge poll.
Why do people pay it, is there rehab for this sort of thing?
Speaking as a grown man - 32 last birthday - who plays Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 I'd like to state for the record that I am in no way mentally unstable. Indeed, I am a retired army officer, married with two small children and I divide my time between working in my local church, maintaining the house and trying to finish my novel.
Although certain models can, indeed, cost as much as £10 (or more, depending on the size of the model) you have to bear in mind that the model can occupy and entertain me for as much as eight or ten hours as I prepare, build and paint it. It then takes a place in once of my armies (most of which comprise of models considerably cheaper than that, more in the order of £2-3 per model) and I get to enjoy it again and again as I use it to play fellow enthusiasts on the tabletop.
So that £10 pays itself back in terms of pleasure and amusement several dozen times over... before I then sell it on eBay (probably for more than I paid for it, because I flatter myself that my painting is pretty good) and use the money to buy more little men.
Compare my hobby with other: computer games cost £20-30 each and will hold the attention for no more than a season, and that's not taking into account the cost of the latest hardware. Football season tickets run into hundreds of pounds before also paying for transport, parking and feeding. One of my best friends loves cars and can happily spend thousands of pounds renovating an old car: money that he will never get back because the resale value of even the finished car is rare more than what he pays for it.
Of course (you say), but you're a grown man with money in your pocket. Well, notwithstanding the fact that I'm not in the least bit well off, I have a number of young people in my wargaming club who manage to get by quite happily by using eBay to pick up bargains and speding birthday and Christmas money in Games Workshop.
Wargaming is also a hobby that encourages so many other aspects of a child's development that I make an effort to promote it to friends with children approaching 9 or 10, which is about the time to start. For a start, learning the patience required to collect and paint and army is a lesson all in itself. Learning the rules of the game and using research and experience to calculate the composition of the most effective army is an art in itself that - as well as teaching valuable research skills, much sought after by employers and higher education establishments - aids mental arithmetic skills.
When you get onto matters like building a gaming table and terrain, one finds a useful way in to teaching children craft and design skills. I first learned to handle a jigsaw, a hot wire cutter, a glue gun, a screwdriver and all sorts of other craft tools that I now use around the house daily when I was first setting up a wargaming club at my school as a teenager.
Then there's the actual playing aspect. I know some parents have worried that it somehow glorifies warfare. But, as an ex-soldier myself, I feel that it does the opposite. When you see you lovingly collected and painted soldiers shot dead and torn apart in combat on the tabletop it serves as a useful reminder that in real war casualties happen. And, more importantly, wargames are a tremendous leveller. It doesn't matter if you're 13 or 30: you can still play each other with an equal chance of victory and I see older and younger gamers meeting on a footing more equal at the wargaming club than, I think, anywhere else in society.
Finally, the wargames of Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 are set in a rich, vibrant universe that fans love to explore through the novels published by Black Library Publishing (and I'm happy to say that my first story for the Black Library is out this Summer), encouraging young people to read and discover the pleasure of books.
All in all, whether or not you have deep pockets, the Games Workshop Hobby (and wargaming in general, because there are more companies than just GW doing this) is one that has a lot to offer those who enjoy it and dismissing it - and me - as some sort of "sad case" simply because you don't understand the value of the product is short-sighted.
I hope that has, at least, answered the question of why people pay for it. As to whether there is rehab, I don't know. I'm quite happy with my toy soldiers and, when my children are old enough, I will be delighted to introduce them to my addiction. When I compare it with the many other alternatives, I can think of few things I would rather they enjoyed than this.
Wargames: Battles At The Kitchen Table
Wargames are games that usually use military tactics while focusing on some fantasy type situation. In the real world military war game means that they will try out some military training maneuvers in a game like setting. These exercises help real soldiers to develop strategies and learn how to be prepared for any tactical situation.
In 1898, the creation of non-military type of wargaming was created by F. Jane who was famous for recreating sea battles, using lead and tin solders to replicate whole armies were the basis of these recreations. These collections of earlier armies were used to show how famous battles were won and lost.
In the 1970's and 80's wargaming opened new doors when they added science fiction situation and fantasy scenarios, using these miniature figurines whole lives could be created and entire wars could be carried out. These games quickly became a favorite of gaming enthusiasts and science fiction fans, people all over the world could live out whole lives in these games and create complicated strategies for winning, causing many companies to come up with many different wargame games.
The wargaming environment comes in three different categories, each with different types of game play. The first of these games is the historical wargames, in these games you are recreating historical wars, you can play games such as Napoleonic Wars, or the American Civil War. These games can be exciting recreations of interesting wars. The next type is the Naval games which recreates the famous at sea battles such as Jutland and Trafalgar. The last of these three are the most fun of all of the types is the fantasy wargame miniatures, they come in popular types such as Warhammer, The Lord of the Rings and Dungeons and Dragons Miniatures.
Playing these games require strategy in how you collect your pieces and build your terrain using skills like building a model railroad. You will want to research the history and make accurate recreations. Figures are usually made using pewter, lead and in many cases plastic. The games themselves are usually made up by the creator of the game and are usually based on history. Many like to create their own models, however in many cases, you can buy these sets in specialty stores and through their manufacturers.
There are some normal scales for the actual height of the figures; in any of the series you will find that they are all about these sizes.
The figures have standard sizes, most are 1 inch high or about 25 mm, and this is called the 1:72 scales. Usually this is the size of most toy soldiers. Another popular scale is the 1:32 scale in which the figures are about 2 3/8 inches high or about 54-56 mm high. Many of the British soldiers are this height. The more modern miniatures are somewhat smaller; because the belief is that if the figure is smaller the battle can be bigger. The models come in many small sizes such as microarmor which is 1:285 or 6mm and Dungeons and Dragons miniatures are 1:64 or 1 1/4 inches or 25mm and is one of the most popular for fantasy role playing games. There are also some that are used specifically for heroic leads, which may be 28mm.
